AI diagnoses brain tumors
ALSO advanced voice cloning and Israel-Hamas disinformation
Welcome back!
The Israel-Hamas war has already become a target for disinformation on social media, some of which is enabled by generative AI.
We’ll also take a look at a groundbreaking new AI tool for surgeons and an impressive voice cloning software. Let’s dive in.

Scientists in the Netherlands report using a new AI tool that helps surgeons make tough decisions on the operating table.
What you need to know:
Neurosurgeons frequently face a crucial decision in the operating room: cut away some healthy brain tissue to ensure that a tumor is fully removed, or protect the healthy tissue and risk leaving some menacing cells behind.
A new AI tool called Sturgeon scans segments of a tumor’s DNA and creates a detailed diagnosis of the type and subtype of the brain tumor.
Sturgeon generates its diagnosis in the early stages of an hourslong surgery, which helps surgeons decide how aggressively to operate.
The system was tested during 25 live brain surgeries and delivered 18 correct diagnoses. It accurately diagnosed 45 of 50 cases during initial testing on frozen tumor samples.
The other side: Experts agree that Sturgeon is an incredibly powerful model, but it comes with limitations. Some tumors are especially difficult to diagnose because they include some healthy brain tissue, making it difficult for the system to identify tumor-specific markers. There can also be differences within a single patient’s tumor cells, meaning the small segment being sequenced by Sturgeon may not be representative of the entire tumor.
The bottom line: This is an exciting breakthrough for medical AI. A refined Sturgeon model could help neurosurgeons confidently make critical decisions about patients’ operations.
🤖 Translate your voice with ElevenLabs
Source: Adobe Firefly
Voice AI startup ElevenLabs just launched a new AI dubbing tool that translates speech into different languages while preserving the original speaker’s voice. This tool is perfect for creators who want to reach a broader audience without being limited by language.
Step 1: Select your source language and target language. ElevenLabs can translate speech into 29 different languages.
Step 2: Upload your content. ElevenLabs accepts local files and URLs.
Step 3: Download and republish your translated content.
50-word review: This tool blew me away. My AI voice clone sounded exactly like me in each language I tried, and the new voiceovers were always perfectly synced up with the video I uploaded. Everyone should try this tool to see how impressive its AI voice clones are.
📸 EU warns Meta over disinformation targeting Israel-Hamas war
Source: Adobe Firefly
The European Union just expanded its warning about illegal content and disinformation targeting the Israel-Hamas war to Meta.
The details:
The EU previously published an urgent letter to Elon Musk raising concerns that X is being used to disseminate illegal content and harmful disinformation.
Thierry Breton, the bloc’s internal market commissioner, sent a similar letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Meta was initially given 24 hours to respond to the EU’s concerns about content risks on Facebook and Instagram.
The company has since stated that it established a “special operations center” to “closely monitor and respond to this rapidly evolving situation.”
Why it matters: Political deepfakes have emerged as a huge area of concern as developments in generative AI make it cheaper and easier to produce this type of disinformation. Nothing on social media will be believable until all AI-generated content is labeled as synthetic media.
