TOP STORY

🗞️ Biden administration names director of new AI safety institute

DALL-E 3

The Biden administration named Elizabeth Kelly as the director of the new safety institute for AI.

The details:

  • Kelly played a major role in drafting Joe Biden’s AI executive order in October that established the institute.

  • By July, the institute will create a “red team” that tests major AI products to ensure safety for consumers and businesses.

  • A universal set of safety standards for AI companies will also be finalized this summer.

Why it matters: Regulation has failed to keep pace with AI innovation since ChatGPT launched in November 2022. Given the threats posed by AI-generated deepfakes in recent months, this is a significant step in the right direction.

AI TOOL OF THE DAY

🤖 Apple releases AI tool for image editing with text

Source: Apple

Apple researchers just released a new AI model that edit images through text prompts.

How it works:

  • Users can describe changes (crop, resize, flip or filter) to an image in plain language without manually using photo editing software.

  • The MGIE model can also “imagine” new objects (ex. “Make this pizza more healthy” would add vegetable toppings).

  • Apple has released MGIE on GitHub and Hugging Face according to VentureBeat

Why it matters: AI image generation platforms like OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 and Adobe Firefly can already perform simple photo editing tasks through text inputs. Apple’s new model opens the door to more complex tasks like changing the shape or brightness of an object.

DALL-E 3

In a flashy Super Bowl ad campaign of its own, Microsoft announced its AI-powered digital assistant Copilot is getting new design-focused upgrades.

Key points:

  • Copilot now features an improved AI model called “Deucalion.”

  • Designer in Copilot, which turns text prompts into images, has been equipped with new editing capabilities and tighter guardrails.

  • Microsoft plans to bring Designer GPT to Copilot soon, offering a more “immersive and dedicated canvas” where users can “visualize their ideas.”

Why it matters: Microsoft Copilot aims to be an everyday AI assistant for everyone. These new upgrades look to automate tasks like creating ads, social media content, graphics and more.
