TOP STORY

🗞️ Microsoft explores the future of work

Source: Microsoft

Microsoft just released its New Future of Work Report 2023 with a focus on the transformative potential of AI technology.

What you should know:

  • Using AI tools led to significant productivity gains, but effects on quality were mostly neutral.

  • Novice and low-skilled workers benefited from AI tools the most.

  • Appropriate reliance on AI is a key challenge in human-AI interactions. Overreliance can lead to people accepting incorrect AI outputs.

  • Constructing optimal prompts is difficult, but crucial to reaping the benefits of AI tools.

Why it matters: Recent studies indicate that we won’t be handing our jobs over to AI anytime soon, but this report suggests that we will be working alongside it soon. Microsoft says this will take shape as more organizations integrate AI into their workflows.

AI TOOL OF THE DAY

🤖 Amazon unveils Diffuse to Choose

Source: Amazon

Amazon researchers just unveiled Diffuse to Choose (DTC), an AI tool that lets customers place almost any e-commerce item in any setting. This includes virtually trying on clothes or placing furniture in a room.

How it works:

  • DTC is an inpainting model that uses two separate networks to process a product image.

  • One network focuses on the overall image, while the other focuses on the product.

  • This allows DTC to preserve the fine details of a product without any product-specific training.

A look ahead: Amazon may be creating a new standard in e-commerce. DTC promises a more personalized online shopping experience that could help consumers make more informed purchasing decisions.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

📸 Apple plans to integrate gen AI into iOS 18

DALL-E 3

Apple is set to integrate generative AI capabilities into iOS 18 according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, making it one of the biggest software updates in iPhone history.

Key points:

  • Apple reportedly plans to improve Siri and iMessage with generative AI.

  • The company is also exploring ways to add AI features to other apps like Apple Music, Notes, Pages and more.

  • Gurman previously reported that Apple is working on its own LLM called “Ajax” and an internal chatbot called Apple GPT.

  • The release of iOS 18 is expected in November.

Why it matters: Siri is going to get a lot smarter this year. Imagine having a personal AI assistant (as advanced as ChatGPT) right on your iPhone or Mac. It almost feels like something straight out of a “Black Mirror” episode.

The bottom line: Apple may end up being the big winner of the AI race.
