🗞️ The Latest in AI: US Air Force denies running simulation in which AI drone ‘killed its operator’

On Friday the Air Force denied staging a simulation in which an AI-enabled drone ‘killed’ its human operator in order to complete its mission. The simulation first made headlines when Air Force Col. Tucker Hamilton described an exercise in which an AI-controlled drone was told to identify and destroy surface-to-air missiles. The final “go, no-go” was given by a human operator, and the AI drone earned points by destroying SAMs.

Several sources reported that at times the system would identify a threat but the human operator would tell it not to kill that threat. The system reportedly responded by ‘killing’ its human operator that was keeping it from accomplishing its objective.

Hamilton later said that he misspoke, and that he was only speaking about a hypothetical scenario to demonstrate the potential dangers of AI. The Air Force says it did not conduct such a simulation with a drone.

“The Department of the Air Force has not conducted any such AI-drone simulations and remains committed to ethical and responsible use of AI technology,” Ann Stefanek, an Air Force spokesperson, said in a statement.

The reported simulation is closely related to a paper published by OpenAI in 2016, which found that an AI trained in a game called CoastRunners carried out destructive subgoals to achieve its programmed end goal.

📸 Industry Spotlight: AI legal assistants

Innovators hope that AI will revolutionize the field of law. Lawyers spend 20% of their time conducting legal research, but in the future they may be able to spend more time working directly with their clients as an AI assistant reads through millions of pages of law per second. This could in turn make lawyers cheaper and more accessible for lower and middle-class citizens.

Legal Robot will soon provide automated legal analysis for everyone, featuring a tool that translates legalese into plain language. DoNotPay is already empowering the public to easily handle various legal issues, such as consumer rights, parking tickets, and small claims disputes. Its AI-powered chatbot offers automated legal advice, assistance in drafting letters, and step-by-step guidance through numerous legal processes.

These platforms are constantly expanding their resources and adapting to new legal challenges. They have already become versatile tools for both law professionals and businesses seeking legal assistance, and will only become more advanced in the future.
