Sam Altman will return as CEO of OpenAI after nearly all of the company’s employees threatened to leave for Microsoft.
The details:
Former OpenAI President Greg Brockman will also return.
A new board of up to nine people will reset the governance of OpenAI. Microsoft and Altman both want a seat on the board.
Both sides have agreed to an investigation into Altman’s firing.
Reuters reports that a new AI breakthrough that could “threaten humanity” preceded Altman’s exit.
Why it matters: Board members who initially ousted Altman have withheld the reasoning for his firing. If his exit was related to OpenAI’s latest breakthrough, it’s possible that the company will announce some major AGI-related news soon.

Google’s Bard chatbot can now watch YouTube videos for you and answer complex queries about specific video content.
This is an especially useful tool for recipes and how-to videos. Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Copy the URL of the YouTube video you want summarized.
Step 2: Paste the URL into Bard and ask it to “summarize the main points of this YouTube video: [URL].”
Step 3: Click “regenerate draft” if you aren’t satisfied with Bard’s initial summary.

Elon Musk says xAI will launch Grok to X Premium+ subscribers sometime this week.
What you should know:
Grok is an AI chatbot that will compete with ChatGPT.
It will be integrated directly into X (formerly Twitter) and have a unique tab within the platform.
Grok sets itself apart from other chatbots with its distinctive personality and real-time access to X.
Users will be able to submit feedback on Grok’s responses to help train the model over time.
Why it matters: X is a leading platform for real-time news, but is also known for widespread misinformation. Grok could be the most useful chatbot to date or a misinformation machine depending on how xAI determines what to feed into the model.
