AI is already stealing the show at this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, as some of the industry’s biggest names have come together to discuss the future of the rapidly-evolving technology.
What you should know:
OpenAI confirmed it is working with the U.S. military on cybersecurity projects.
The company is also ramping up efforts to combat election misinformation. This includes implementing new guardrails on existing models and ‘ID’ing’ AI-generated images.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said an energy breakthrough is necessary for AI progress, and that current practices are not sustainable.
Leaders from Microsoft and Google expressed optimism about the future of AI, citing beneficial applications in education and healthcare.
Why it matters: To this point, AI regulation has failed to keep pace with innovation. The World Economic Forum is an opportunity for AI leaders to reach a global consensus on the technology’s future.
AI TOOL OF THE DAY
🤖 How to generate images with DALL-E 3
DALL-E 3
You’ve probably noticed that the visuals in this newsletter look much better than they did last week. Today I want to share the text-to-image model that made it happen: OpenAI’s DALL-E 3.
How to use DALL-E 3:
Go to chat.openai.com and subscribe to ChatGPT Plus (alternatively, you can use DALL-E 3 for free in Bing Chat).
Select ‘GPT-4’ in the top-left corner of your screen (ChatGPT users only).
Prompt ChatGPT or Bing to generate images or art (ex. “generate a 16:9 photo of a tiger on the hunt”).
DALL-E 3 is without a doubt the best AI image generator I’ve tried to date. Highly recommend giving it a try, even just to see its impressive capabilities for yourself.
BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
📸 Altman says human-level AI is coming soon
DALL-E 3
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman predicts that human-level AI could arrive relatively soon, but he isn’t concerned about the impact it will have on the world.
Key points:
OpenAI’s core mission is to create artificial general intelligence (AGI), a hypothetical AI agent that could complete tasks as well as (or better than) humans.
Altman says AGI could arrive in the “reasonably close-ish future.”
He added that “it will change the world much less than we all think and it will change jobs much less than we all think.”
Expert opinions are mixed, but Google DeepMind cofounder Shane Legg says that researchers have a 50-50 chance to create AGI by 2028.
My thoughts: This prediction is bold and vague, but we do know that OpenAI is already working on GPT-5. Although I think Altman is overly optimistic about AGI’s arrival, a major breakthrough is looming.
