TOP STORY
🗞️ Apple Intelligence to launch later this year
DALL-E 3
Apple just announced its on-device suite of generative AI tools called “Apple Intelligence.” The company aims to create a personalized AI experience tailored to each user’s data and preferences.
Siri 2.0:
Siri is getting some major upgrades, and it will be integrated more deeply into Apple devices.
The voice assistant will be powered by LLMs that give it a better understanding of language and make it more conversational (ex. If you reference an upcoming vacation spot in a request, you can follow up with “What will the weather be like?” and Siri will understand what you’re asking).
This includes a ChatGPT integration that can handle more complex requests. Apple says it will ask for your permission before it prompts ChatGPT, and Siri will present its answers to you.
Siri will also have onscreen awareness, meaning it can “see” what’s on your screen and act on it (ex. I could’ve asked Siri to summarize all of my open tabs instead of reading through 10+ Apple Intelligence articles to write this).
This feature works across different apps (including third-party apps), allowing users to do things like enhance a new photo and send it to a friend with simple voice commands.
Lastly, Siri will remember “personal context” that can help users find specific information (ex. “When does mom’s flight land?” → Siri can find details about your mom’s flight in texts or emails and match them with real-time flight tracking).
Other important announcements:
New systemwide Writing Tools will allow users to rewrite, proofread and summarize text across apps. These tools have a wide range of use cases. Anything from cleaning up a cover letter to summarizing long text threads is fair game.
ChatGPT will also be available in Apple’s writing tools without creating an account.
Apple Intelligence identifies your most important notifications and summarizes them into “priority notifications” on your lock screen.
Similarly, priority messages in Mail will move time-sensitive emails to the top of your inbox. Mail will also offer automatic summaries of long emails, and a Smart Reply feature will allow users to reply in just a few taps.
Apple says many of the new features will run entirely on device. It will use a “Private Cloud Compute” approach for more complex requests.
Why it matters: For better or worse, Apple is about to bring generative AI-powered personal assistants to everyday life. Apple Intelligence will certainly offer a wide range of time-saving features, but it’s hard to imagine what this will look like as AI continues to evolve.

Apple Intelligence will be free to use, but starting this fall it will only be available in beta on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPads or Macs with M1 or newer chips.
BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
📸 Musk threatens to ban Apple devices at his companies
DALL-E 3
Not everyone was happy about Apple’s official partnership with OpenAI. Elon Musk is threatening to ban Apple devices at all of his companies after the deal was confirmed.
The details:
Musk said in a post on X that integrating OpenAI’s tech into Apple’s operating systems “is an unacceptable security violation.”
He continued to berate both companies in an ensuing flurry of posts.
Musk, who cofounded OpenAI in 2015 before leaving in 2018, largely based his rant on OpenAI’s data security and ChatGPT’s “wokeness.”
Quick take: Miss from Musk. Apple and OpenAI both say users won’t be forced to use ChatGPT. OpenAI’s data-use policy will also only apply to users who connect their ChatGPT accounts to their Apple devices.
