🗞️ Generative AI usage remains low despite ChatGPT hype
DALL-E 3
A new study by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism and the University of Oxford shows that relatively few users regularly use ChatGPT.
Crunching the numbers:
Daily ChatGPT use is rare across all six countries surveyed, peaking at just 7% in the United States.
56% of respondents aged 18-24 have tried ChatGPT at least once, but only 27% of younger people use it weekly or daily.
24% of respondents say they use generative AI to obtain information, while 28% use it to create new content.
ChatGPT is up to 4x more popular than other leading AI tools like Google Gemini.
The big picture: These numbers are unsurprising because it’s hard to attract new users to stand-alone AI tools that they are unfamiliar with. Today’s business spotlight explores how people will eventually be forced to adopt generative AI as it is integrated into everyday devices.

Canva announced several upgrades to its Magic Studio suite of AI design tools at Canva Create 2024 in Los Angeles.
What’s new:
Magic Media can now generate graphics like icons, stickers and illustrations in addition to images and videos.
Magic Write now offers personalization options that can replicate your unique tone of voice.
Magic Design was broadly upgraded to consistently generate higher-quality templates.
Canva’s video editor added a Highlight tool that can capture the best parts of a video and generate short clips for social media.
Rapid Review: Canva is leveraging AI to enable anyone to create eye-catching content. I recently used some of Canva’s new tools to create visuals for this newsletter, and they’re definitely worth looking into. Click here to check out the full list of Magic Studio upgrades.
BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
📸 Apple prepares Project Greymatter for WWDC
DALL-E 3 (Project Greymatter probably gets its name from grey matter, an essential type of tissue in your brain and spinal cord linked to mental functions and memory)
Apple is preparing to unveil Project Greymatter, a set of AI tools that will integrate into its core apps, at its Worldwide Developers Conference starting June 10.
What you should know:
Project Greymatter will bring generative AI capabilities to essential Apple apps like Safari, Photos and Notes.
In addition to Siri 2.0, new features will include automatic voice memo transcriptions, the ability to retouch photos with AI and suggested replies to texts and emails.
Smart recaps will provide iPhone users with summaries of their missed notifications and text messages.
Apple is also planning some fun features, such as AI-generated emojis that are created based on the context of a text discussion.
Processing for less computing-intensive features will run entirely on a user’s device. More complex processing will be pushed to the cloud.
Why it matters: Despite the hype around generative AI, stand-alone tools like ChatGPT have struggled to find their place in everyday life. Apple is getting set to launch a family of AI tools with real-world practicality that will drastically change our relationship with technology.
