Apple quietly unveils state-of-the-art AI features

OpenAI is also being sued for libel

Welcome back to another eventful day in AI. Talk show host Mark Walters is suing OpenAI over a libelous response generated by ChatGPT. In other news, Apple is rolling out new OS features that are quietly powered by AI behind the scenes. I’ll also be sharing an AI-assisted drawing tool that makes creating simple graphics a piece of cake.

🗞️ The Latest in AI: OpenAI sued for libel

Georgia radio host Mark Walters is suing OpenAI after ChatGPT claimed Walters had defrauded and embezzled funds from the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) in The Second Amendment Foundation v. Robert Ferguson case. ChatGPT’s hallucination occurred when a journalist named Fredy Riehl asked the chatbot to provide a summary of the legal case.

ChatGPT said that Walters had served as SAF’s treasurer and chief financial officer, and that he is accused of misappropriating funds for personal expenses without authorization or reimbursement. None of ChatGPT’s claims were true according to the lawsuit filed against OpenAI. Walters has never worked for SAF and was not named in the original complaint.

Hallucinations by ChatGPT are fairly commonplace, and have been one of the biggest problems facing generative AI as a whole. ChatGPT frequently produces inaccurate information and fabricated content when the data it has access to is insufficient to answer a question. This is the first time that this issue has led to a legal complaint.

Legal experts think that Walters is unlikely to prevail in this case. As a talk show host with Armed American Radio, a pro-firearms national radio broadcast, he will likely be classified as a public figure in court. If that is the case, his attorneys will have to prove intent to cause some harm and that the damages actually occurred.

📸 Business Spotlight: Apple’s subtly announces new AI features

Apple has steered clear of the spotlight when it comes to AI, and has yet to openly enter the ongoing AI race. Although Apple doesn’t like to talk about artificial intelligence, its 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) featured an array of new product features that are quietly driven by AI.

Instead of building large AI models with server farms, supercomputers and vast datasets, Apple wants AI models on its devices. Several significant AI features were announced at WWDC on Monday.

  1. Persona for Vision Pro: The star of WWDC was Apple Vision Pro, an augmented reality headset that allows users to see digital content overlaid on their view of the real world. One of Vision Pro’s features, Persona, relies heavily on advanced machine learning techniques. Apple says Persona is a digital representation of a Vision Pro’s wearer created by built-in cameras’ face scans. When a user joins a FaceTime call or other video conference, their digital twin will appear in their place and match their expressions and gestures in real time.

  2. Personalized Volume: A feature for AirPods that “uses ML to understand environmental conditions and listening preferences over time” and automatically adjusts volume to what it thinks users want.

  3. Improved Autocorrect: Apple’s latest update to the iPhone’s operating system contains a new autocorrect that uses a transformer model similar to GPT-4. The model aims to improve autocorrect’s word prediction capabilities.

  4. Improved Dictation: iOS 17 includes a new speech recognition model that likely uses on-device machine learning. This will make the iPhone’s speech-to-text more accurate.

While Apple may appear to be sitting on the sidelines in the AI race between tech giants, this week showed just how much work it’s doing in state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and machine learning. Click here to see the full list of AI-powered features unveiled by Apple this week.
