TOP STORY

🗞️ OpenAI begins rolling out ChatGPT’s new voice mode

DALL-E 3

OpenAI is rolling out advanced Voice Mode to a small number of ChatGPT Plus users, allowing GPT-4o to engage in more natural, real-time conversations.

The rundown:

  • Advanced Voice Mode achieves almost instantaneous response times because GPT-4o was trained end-to-end on audio inputs.

  • This means the model produces speech in real-time, rather than converting text responses to speech like previous GPTs.

  • GPT-4o’s voice capabilities have been tested across 45 languages, and OpenAI says it has implemented more safety guardrails since it initially demoed advanced Voice Mode.

  • This update will roll out to all ChatGPT Plus users in the fall. Video and screen sharing capabilities are set to launch at a later date.

Why it matters: GPT-4o’s new Voice Mode sets the stage for the launch of on-device voice assistants powered by advanced LLMs. OpenAI has partnered with Apple to integrate ChatGPT into iOS experiences, which means advanced Voice Mode may reach some of your devices by 2025. This will make everyday assistants like Siri exponentially more useful.

AI TOOL OF THE DAY

🤖 Wix’s AI can now generate blog posts

Source: Wix

Wix is launching new generative AI tools that can generate entire SEO-optimized blog posts for your website.

Key points:

  • Wix says the new tools create “AI-generated drafts or outlines” that human writers can use as a foundation for authentic blog posts.

  • Websites with blogs get 86% more organic traffic compared to sites without blogs.

  • Wix’s new tools are designed to generate SEO-optimized blog posts that rank higher on Google’s search engine.

The bigger picture: Users are starting to get frustrated with AI-generated content online. The Verge’s Jess Weatherbed (hyperlinked above) says Wix’s new tools will create “a web further filled with AI-generated garbage at the expense of legitimate, genuinely useful information.” Despite negative attitudes toward tools like this, the cat is out of the bag when it comes to AI-powered SEO.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

📸 Taco Bell plans to launch AI drive-thru tech

Source: Taco Bell

Taco Bell has announced plans to expand its use of AI voice technology in its drive-thrus by the end of the year.

The details:

  • Parent company Yum! Brands aims to introduce AI ordering at hundreds of U.S. locations.

  • Customers around the country will place their orders with AI rather than human employees.

  • Yum! Brands insists that AI ordering technology will not replace human team members, but will increase order accuracy and reduce drive-thru wait times.

  • The company’s chief innovation officer says this tech could eventually be implemented at other chains, such as Pizza Hut and KFC.

Reality Check: If McDonald’s couldn’t get this right, Taco Bell probably won’t either. Cutting-edge voice technology will hit consumer devices in 2025, but even that doesn’t mean the tech is ready to handle fast-paced customer interactions. Still, this could be a good test drive for Taco Bell, a notoriously slow fast food brand.
