🗞️ The Latest: Eight more companies commit to White House AI safety accord

Source: Ideogram

Yesterday eight companies promised the White House they would develop safe, secure and trustworthy AI. This is the second such agreement the Biden administration has negotiated with AI developers.

What you need to know:

  • Companies that committed yesterday include Adobe, IBM, Nvidia, Cohere, Palantir, Salesforce, Scale AI and Stability AI.

  • The agreements are voluntary and companies will not be punished for violating them.

  • Many of the commitments are similar to earlier ones signed by Meta, Google and OpenAI.

  • The White House says the companies have agreed to create internal and external testing of AI systems before commercial release. They will also invest in safeguards and share information with the government to manage risks.

  • The companies additionally agree to allow third-party reporting of vulnerabilities, watermark AI-generated material and publicly report risks.

The bottom line: This is a step in the right direction but Congress needs to pick up the pace on AI legislation. Striking the right balance between innovation and regulation will be key to the future of safe AI.

📸 Business Spotlight: Coca-Cola unveils new mystery flavor created by AI

Source: Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola has spent the last year and a half experimenting with limited-edition soft drinks that have mystery flavors with futuristic concepts. The company’s latest flavor fully taps into that theme as it is partially created by AI.

Key points:

  • Coca-Cola Y3000 is “futuristic flavored” according to its packaging.

  • The soft drink giant refers to Y3000 as “the first futuristic flavor co-created with human and artificial intelligence.”

  • Researchers at Coca-Cola first collected “key flavor preferences and trends to understand what consumers imagine and think the future tastes like.” That information was crunched by Coke’s AI system to “help develop flavor profiles and pairings.”

  • AI was also used to develop the can’s futuristic packaging (pictured above).

  • The drink comes in zero and full sugar varieties and will be accompanied by a futuristic clothing launch.

The bottom line: This is a very intriguing use for AI. It’ll be interesting to see how consumers react to the new flavor and if we’ll get more AI-generated flavors in the future.
