🗞️ The Latest in AI: Schools hope AI-powered weapons detectors can improve school safety

As of June 1, there have been 61 incidents of gunfire on school grounds this year. An incident in January, in which a 6-year-old shot his first-grade teacher in the chest, prompted the Newport News school system to put weapons detectors in all schools.

Since the pandemic, more students nationwide have been showing up to school with guns. To address rising fears about school safety, at least 10 Virginia school districts have implemented AI scanners to flag weapons at school entrances.

Some schools are turning to Evolv, the leading weapons detection technology for schools, for noninvasive systems that can scan thousands of people per hour. Evolv streamlines the search process by using AI to identify weapons, meaning students aren’t required to empty pockets or backpacks. Its machines use “active sensing,” a light-emission technique that creates images that are compared with the shapes of weapons the AI recognizes.

The system draws an orange box around suspicious items on a live video feed, prompting security personnel to conduct further screening. Evolv’s systems are already commonplace in sports arenas, stadiums and other large venues. Now, Evolv’s technology is in more than 450 schools nationwide.

School leaders concede that the systems cannot prevent extreme tragedies, but they see detectors as a way to reduce the possibility without disrupting the educational environment.
