📸 Business Spotlight: 4 successful attempts to use AI in restaurants
1. McDonald’s wants to automate and predict orders:
The fast-food giant has been investing in AI and machine learning since 2019 to implement more automation and prediction into the ordering process. Drive-thru digital menu boards can adjust throughout the day to feature items that are popular at a certain time of day, in certain types of weather, or based on how busy the restaurant is. The upselling process is also automated as AI technology makes suggestions on potential items to add to every bill. The company has recently tested automated voice-ordering technology, personalized greetings, and customized recommendations via license plate recognition technology.
2. Autonomous delivery robots
Delivery robots aim to ease the pressure of nearly 1.3 million unfilled restaurant job openings. College campuses are ideal for autonomous delivery. Einstein Bros. Bagels at Missouri University of Science and Technology saw sales increase by $4,000 a week since introducing robot delivery. Grubhub uses robot delivery on several college campuses across the country. Uber Eats began testing delivery robots in Miami in 2022, and recently launched another trial in Fairfax, Virginia. Customers don’t have to worry about delivery robots calling off or refusing to take orders, and they don’t have to tip.
3. Domino’s improves product quality by more than 15%
Domino’s partnered with Dragontail Systems to develop the DOM Pizza Checker, which launched in Australia and New Zealand in 2019. The system uses computer vision to check pizzas for quality before being sliced and delivered. Data is logged to provide better training for employees, and the system improved product quality by more than 15%.
4. Virtual assistants take phone orders at Wingstop
Wingstop began piloting virtual assistants in March to take phone orders and free up employees’ time. The technology aims to replicate a human conversation and can take multiple orders simultaneously. Wingstop hopes the technology will reduce hold time and allow employees to focus on cooking food and serving in-store customers.
