🗞️ The Latest in AI: Japan emphasizes AI in new school guidelines

Japan’s education ministry emphasized the importance of students’ comprehension of AI in new guidelines released Tuesday. The guidelines also laid out a procedure for integrating generative AI into schools and the needed precautions to address risks.

According to the guidelines, students should comprehend the characteristics of AI including disadvantages such as information leaks and copyright infringement before they use it. They explicitly state that passing off AI-generated reports and essays as one’s own work is inappropriate.

The guidelines promote the use of AI in English learning and encourage its integration into group activities. They also suggest that teachers may need to scrap traditional exam and homework methods that can be done easily with AI.

The ministry says that the new guidelines are intended to be implemented in public schools and other educational institutions. The guidelines are tentative and will be updated based on feedback and the development of other rules relating to AI technology.
