TOP STORY

🗞️ Former OpenAI researcher predicts AGI by 2027

DALL-E 3

Former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner just published a new essay series that predicts the arrival of AGI by 2027.

What you should know:

  • Aschenbrenner says the jump from GPT-2 to GPT-4 improved AI from “preschooler to smart high-schooler abilities.” He expects a similar jump to bring us AGI by 2027.

  • He adds that AI progress won’t stop at the human level, because AGI could automate research and compress decades of progress into a year or less.

  • The researcher says this jump could require investments of $1 trillion for a single training cluster.

  • Aschenbrenner also raises serious national security concerns, claiming that current industry practices “are basically just handing superintelligence to the [Chinese Communist Party].”

Why it matters: As a highly reputable researcher in the AI sector, Aschenbrenner’s prediction carries significant weight. Above all, the critical importance of his safety concerns should be the primary focus of this discussion. Aschenbrenner recently revealed he was fired from OpenAI for raising safety concerns, and he openly warns that superintelligence will require Manhattan Project-level security to prevent it from falling into the hands of China or the Middle East.

AI TOOL OF THE DAY

🤖 Wix launches new tool that can generate smartphone apps

Source: Wix

Wix is launching a generative AI feature that allows users to build iOS and Android apps using simple text prompts.

How it works:

  • The tool uses a chatbot-like interface that enables users to share the goals, intent and aesthetic of their app.

  • It then generates all of the code for a branded app that is fully native to iOS and Android.

  • Customers are able to edit and preview their app before publishing it to the App Store.

  • Each Wix-generated app is automatically updated to work with the latest versions of iOS and Android.

Why it matters: Wix’s new tool allows app developers to offload the majority of their work to AI. Although the tool is still an early stage product, we’ve already reached a point where anyone can build a basic mobile app without writing a single line of code.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

📸 Apple hits $3 trillion valuation as iPhone AI hype grows

Source: Apple

Apple’s market cap surged to $3 trillion yesterday as Wall Street awaits a slew of AI announcements at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference next week.

The details:

  • Apple’s stock rose as much as 1% to $196.42 on Wednesday, reaching its highest price since December.

  • Investors hope that Apple’s AI announcements (including a new partnership with OpenAI) will revive slumping iPhone sales

  • Wall Street analysts say Apple’s WWDC event will highlight whether the company has caught up to the rest of the industry in AI.

  • We expect to see Apple announce generative AI across iPhone-exclusive applications like Siri and iMessage.

Why it matters: It looks like Apple is set to formally enter the generative AI race at WWDC next week. This doesn’t come as a surprise given developments in recent weeks, but it could ultimately fuel the general public’s adoption of generative AI by the end of this year.
