TOP STORY

🗞️ FTC issues open warning to AI companies

Generated by DALL-E 3

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has warned AI companies that they are not exempt from privacy and confidentiality commitments.

The details:

  • Model-as-a-service companies (like OpenAI and Anthropic) that fail to abide by privacy commitments to users may be liable under laws enforced by the FTC.

  • This includes promises to not use customer data for secret purposes, such as training or updating AI models.

  • The FTC also requires businesses to delete products developed using unlawfully obtained consumer data.

Why it matters: AI companies constantly ingest new data to train new models and refine existing ones. Increased transparency is a win for consumers and businesses.

AI TOOL OF THE DAY

Simply prompt Logo Creator with your business or app idea and answer a few questions. It will then create up to nine options for you to choose from. You can refine your logo with additional prompts.

Sample prompt: “Generate a logo for my AI company called PhoenixAI.”

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

📸 Steam to allow AI in video game creation

Source: Sheep/Steam user

Video game publisher Valve just issued new guidelines allowing Steam developers to release games that include pre-generated and live-generated AI content.

Key points:

  • Pre-generated content is created with the help of AI tools during game development.

  • Live-generated content is created with the help of AI tools while a game is running.

  • Valve will require the disclosure of AI use prior to a game’s release.

  • This policy shift comes after Valve initially rejected AI-generated game submissions.

The relevance: A large sector of game developers view AI technology as a destructive force in their industry. AI tools will certainly accelerate development, but will likely contribute to significant job displacement in the gaming industry.
