TOP STORY
🗞️ AI-generated nudes hit California middle school
Source: Beverly Vista Middle School
Students at Beverly Vista Middle School used AI to create fake nude photos of classmates according to school administrators.
What you should know:
The photos included students’ faces laid over nude bodies.
Beverly Hills police have launched a noncriminal investigation.
This is the latest in a string of incidents involving AI-generated nudes of underage female students.
Deepfake technology is becoming increasingly accessible with the rise of AI tools.
Why it matters: This case is relatively tame compared to similar incidents in Washington state and New Jersey. Still, a federal law criminalizing all nonconsensual sexually explicit deepfakes is needed.
AI TOOL OF THE DAY
🤖 Google DeepMind develops image-to-video game tool
Source: Tim Rocktäschel on X
Google DeepMind just unveiled Genie, an AI model that generates interactive video games from text and image prompts.
What it does:
Genie can create side-scrolling 2D platformer games from a single image.
The model leverages various techniques to predict subsequent video frames.
Users can control game characters on a frame-by-frame basis in the generated world.
Google DeepMind developer Tim Rocktäschel says Genie can convert any image into a playable 2D world (implying that photos, sketches, etc. are all acceptable inputs).
Why it matters: The big breakthrough here is that Genie wasn’t trained on action labels, meaning the model taught itself how to simulate users’ in-game movement. DeepMind researchers say this approach could be applied to 3D worlds, which could lead to significant advances in AI robotics.
BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
📸 Apple cancels electric car project to focus on AI
DALL-E 3
Apple has reportedly cancelled its autonomous electric car project to reassign engineers to generative AI projects.
The details:
Apple had nearly 2,000 employees working on the decade-long EV project.
Many employees from the Special Projects Group will shift to the AI division under John Giannandrea.
It’s unclear how many layoffs will result from the move.
Apple’s stock rose about 1% after Bloomberg reported the news.
Why it matters: Apple is continuing to make a strategic shift toward generative AI projects. The tech giant is locked in on bringing new AI capabilities to iPhones and Macs, and the market’s positive reaction highlights AI’s role as a key driver of future growth.
