🗞️ The Latest in AI: Stability AI releases Stable Diffusion XL 1.0

“Utopian city illuminated by blue and purple lights” | SDXL 1.0

Stability AI has released SDXL 1.0. The company claims that the open model is the world’s best open image generation model. The platform is a huge leap forward in the evolution of text-to-image generative AI.

The model can generate high-quality images in any artstyle, including photorealism. SDXL can also generate concepts that are notoriously difficult for image models to render, such as hands, text and spatially arranged compositions.

Its ability to interpret simpler language and distinguish between similar terms with different meanings also outperforms other image models. For example, SDXL understands the difference between “The Red Square” (famous place) and a “red square” (the shape).

SDXL is the largest open image model in the world. It’s built on a new architecture composed of a 3.5B parameter base model and 6.6B parameter refiner.

🤖 AI Tool of the Day: Generative Expand in Photoshop

I’ve shared this tool before, but since Generative Expand is making headlines again it’s worth showing our new readers.

The beta version of Photoshop features an array of capabilities from Adobe’s Firefly family of generative AI models. One of these features expands images beyond their original bounds.

Generative Expand allows users to expand and resize images by clicking and dragging the crop tool to extend a canvas. After clicking the “Generate” button in Photoshop’s contextual taskbar, Generative Expand fills the new white space with AI-generated content that blends in with the existing image.

📸 Business Spotlight: Spotify CEO teases AI-powered personalization features

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek teased that the streaming service is looking to introduce more AI-powered features during the company’s second-quarter earnings call on Tuesday.

Ek said AI could be used to create more personalized experiences, summarize podcasts and generate ads.

Earlier this year, the streaming service launched a DJ feature that delivers a curated selection of music with AI-powered spoken commentary about the songs and artists you like. Ek says listeners should expect to see similar AI features that aim to personalize content in the future.

Leveraging generative AI to summarize podcasts could be a game-changer for creators. Ek thinks podcast summaries could make it easier for listeners to get into new podcasts, leading to higher engagement and more growth.

Spotify is currently seeking a patent for an AI-powered “text-to-speech” synthesis system. The technology can take text and convert it into human-like speech audio that conveys emotion and intention. Spotify acquired Sonantic last year to power its AI DJ feature.
