🗞️ The Latest: The Air Force wants $6 billion to build a fleet of AI drones
Source: USAF
The United States Air Force (USAF) has requested nearly $6 billion in federal funding over the next five years to build a fleet of AI-controlled XQ-58A Valkyrie aircraft.
Key points:
Each XQ-58A Valkyrie is expected to cost $3 million. For comparison, cutting-edge F-22s and F-35s cost $143 million and $75 million respectively.
The USAF hopes to build up to 2,000 pilotless AI drones.
The XQ-58 is built as a stealthy escort aircraft to fly in support of the F-22 and F-35 during combat missions.
Each aircraft could be tailored to a variety of roles, including surveillance, resupply actions and swarming enemy aircraft in active combat.
Why it matters: This request is part of an effort to build out America’s drone production base as China accelerates its conventional weapon production. The AI arms race is still moving at full speed.

Apple is investing millions of dollars per day into artificial intelligence according to The Information. The company believes that its Ajax language model is more powerful than ChatGPT.
What you need to know:
Apple is working on multiple AI models across several teams.
The company’s “Foundational Models” unit is working on conversational AI.
A Visual Intelligence unit is developing an image generation model.
Another group is researching multimodal AI that can recognize and produce videos, images and text.
Apple is developing a chatbot that can interact with customers who use AppleCare, and another that would make it easier to automate multistep tasks with Siri.
Ajax GPT has reportedly been trained on more than 200 billion parameters and is more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-3.5.
The bottom line: Apple has been noticeably quiet about its AI investments, but the company will certainly be a major player in a growing market.
