TOP STORY

🗞️ US government to require AI companies to report safety tests

The Biden administration is requiring AI developers to disclose their safety test results to the U.S. government.

The details:

  • The White House AI Council met yesterday to review progress made since President Biden’s AI executive order

  • The U.S. government wants “to know AI systems are safe before they’re released to the public,” said Ben Buchanan, the White House special advisor on AI.

  • The National Institute of Standards and Technology is developing a uniform framework for assessing safety.

The relevance: Regulation is struggling to keep pace with AI innovation, but this is a step in the right direction. Further action is needed to address potential threats posed by foreign AI developers that collaborate with U.S. companies.

AI TOOL OF THE DAY

🤖 OpenAI launches GPT mentions feature

Screenshot: ChatGPT

OpenAI has silently debuted a new ‘GPT mentions’ feature that seamlessly integrates custom GPTs into a single workflow.

How it works:

  • Type ‘@’ to bring up a list of GPTs to mention and use.

  • This enables users to enlist custom GPTs directly in-chat rather than using the GPT Store.

  • Multiple GPTs can also be integrated into a single chat.

  • This feature is slowly rolling out to ChatGPT premium users.

Why it matters: At first glance this might seem like a minor upgrade to ChatGPT, but enlisting multiple GPTs in a single chat is a step toward digital workflows where a team of AI agents can work together.

  • X estimates its data center will add $241 million in economic impact. Fulton County projects $16 million in new taxes.

  • The project will not create any new jobs, but will retain 24 current employees at a cost of over $420,000 per job.
