🗞️ Musk’s xAI launches Grok chatbot
Source: Elon Musk on X
xAI just unveiled Grok, a “witty and rebellious” chatbot designed to compete with ChatGPT.
The rundown:
Grok was trained in just two months on X (Twitter) data, which is one of the biggest text datasets in the world.
xAI claims the chatbot surpasses GPT-3.5 on certain benchmarks but has not caught up to GPT-4.
Grok has real-time access to posts on X, enabling it to converse about current events. Musk thinks this will give Grok a major advantage over other chatbots trained on older data.
The chatbot is also equipped with a dry sense of humor that allows it to answer “spicy” questions.
Once training is finished, all X users will be able to access Grok through the platform’s Premium Plus subscription.
The relevance: Given that X is a prominent source of breaking news, Grok may a great tool for getting news with clear and unbiased insights. Grok’s uncensored tone is a sharp contrast from other chatbots that rely on tightly guarded responses, but the fact that it was trained in just two months highlights xAI’s competitive threat to OpenAI.
AI INSIGHT
🤖 AI tool for adoption matchmaking disappoints
Source: Adoption-Share, Inc. on LinkedIn
An AI-powered tool that predicts which adoptive families will stay together is facing criticism after an Associated Press investigation revealed it is underperforming.
The details:
Thea Ramirez, the founder and CEO of Adoption-Share, claims that the nonprofit’s Family-Match algorithm could boost successful adoptions across the U.S.
The tool was designed by former researchers at an online dating service.
According to the AP, Ramirez has overstated the capabilities of the Family-Match algorithm to government officials. Social workers reportedly said that the tool wasn’t useful and often led them to unwilling families.
Virginia and Georgia both dropped the algorithm after trial runs, noting its inability to produce adoptions. Tennessee scrapped the program after spending more than two years trying to set it up.
Why you should care: An AI algorithm capable of matching foster children with prospective parents could unlock a new level of efficiency at cash-strapped child welfare agencies. Unfortunately, the few adoption algorithms on the market today seem to fall short of their potential.
RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT
📸 New ‘ChatGPT detector’ accurately flags AI-generated papers
Source: Adobe Firefly
A new machine learning tool can easily detect chemistry papers written by ChatGPT according to a study published in Cell Reports Physical Science.
Key points:
The new tool outperformed two existing AI detectors, and could help academic publishers identify papers created by AI text generators.
Researchers trained the tool on 100 introductory sections published by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and 200 introductions written by GPT-3.5.
The detector identified GPT-3.5-written sections with 98-100% accuracy depending on whether a title was provided. Leading AI detectors on the market today peak at 65% accuracy.
These findings suggest that AI detectors could be improved by tailoring software to specific types of writing.
Why it matters: Cheating and plagiarisim concerns are at the forefront of educational concerns related to the rise of generative AI. This new approach to developing AI detectors could be a game changer for educational institutions around the world.
