TOP STORY

🗞️ Mysterious ‘gpt2-chatbot’ appears online

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stirred the pot on Monday with this post on X.

A new AI model called “gpt2-chatbot” appeared on the Chatbot Arena website earlier this week, sparking speculation that OpenAI is planning an update for ChatGPT.

The details:

  • gpt2-chatbot reportedly shows capabilities at or above the level of GPT-4, which is currently OpenAI’s most advanced model available to the public.

  • AI researcher Andrew Gao says gpt2-chatbot solved an International Mathematical Olympiad problem on its first try.

  • No developers have claimed responsibility for that chatbot, but some speculate that OpenAI is testing a new model before releasing it publicly.

  • gpt2-chatbot has since been removed from the Chatbot Arena.

Why it matters: No one really knows if this means a new version of ChatGPT is on the horizon. The AI community loves to speculate about models like this, and it’s most likely just an iteration of an existing GPT. Either way, it seemed to outperform the world’s leading models for the brief time it was available.

AI INSIGHT

🤖 Chegg shares drop as generative AI emerges as homework assistant

Source: Bloomberg

Wall Street analysts downgraded the shares of Chegg Inc. as the company struggles to compete with free AI tools online.

Key points:

  • Chegg is a popular online platform that offers 24/7 homework help. The company’s shares are on track for their biggest drop in roughly a year.

  • Since the emergence of free AI tools like ChatGPT, the company’s paid subscription model has become almost obsolete.

  • Chegg has restructured its platform with its own large language models, but analysts question whether it is a better AI experience than what students can get for free.

The bigger picture: This is great news for students and bad news for educators. Viewed by many institutions as a cheating tool, Chegg is quickly being replaced by easily accessible AI tools. Schools around the world will be wrestling with AI-driven cheating and plagiarism concerns for a while.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

📸 Tesla closes in on self-driving approval in China

DALL-E 3

Tesla shares rose yesterday after reports that CEO Elon Musk reached a deal with the Chinese tech giant Baidu.

What you should know:

  • Tesla will reportedly gain access to Baidu’s mapping and navigation technology to power a “Full Self Driving” feature.

  • The deal allows Tesla to launch self-driving and driver-assist features on China’s public roads.

  • Chinese government officials approved the deal after Musk’s company met a series of data-security and privacy requirements.

  • The “Full Self Driving” feature will still require a human driver’s oversight at all times.

Why it matters: Tesla’s self-driving technology is facing major legal scrutiny in the U.S. after causing 13 fatal crashes. Musk’s deal with China is an opportunity to continue refining the tech after clearing several legal hurdles, but likely comes at the cost of sharing consumer data with the Chinese government.
