News: Microsoft warns of AI-enabled foreign cyber offensives
Welcome back!
We’re kicking off another week in AI with a little bit of everything: foreign cyber attacks, the future of sports broadcasting and an AI-powered coding assistant for Apple users.
Let’s go.

🗞️ Microsoft reports US rivals are using generative AI in cyber offensives
DALL-E 3
Microsoft says U.S. adversaries (primarily Iran and North Korea) are beginning to use generative AI to organize offensive cyber operations.
What you should know:
North Korean cyberespionage group Kimsuky uses generative AI to create content for spear-phishing hacking campaigns.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has used LLMs to assist in social engineering (think back to last Thursday’s newsletter).
Russia’s Fancy Bear intelligence unit may be using AI models to research satellite and radar technologies related to the war in Ukraine.
Chinese group Maverick Panda is evaluating LLMs’ effectiveness as a source of information on sensitive topics and high profile individuals.
The big picture: Microsoft says these techniques are not “particularly novel or unique,” and OpenAI claims its GPT-4 chatbot only offers limited capabilities for malicious actors. U.S. cybersecurity experts say AI could eventually become one of the most powerful weapons in every nation’s military.
AI TOOL OF THE DAY
🤖 National Basketball Association teases NB-AI
DALL-E 3
NBA commissioner Adam Silver demoed a new viewing experience at the league’s Tech Summit last Friday called NB-AI.
Key points:
NB-AI aims to personalize a fan’s live game viewing experience on the NBA app.
During the demo, Silver prompted the tool to broadcast a live basketball game “as if it were a Spider-Man movie.”
San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama demonstrated a way for fans to view and buy sneakers that players are wearing in real time.
Why it matters: NB-AI is far from being a polished product, but the league’s future-focused efforts to deliver personalized sports broadcasts are commendable. With OpenAI raising the bar in AI video generation last week, there could be a lot of upside for this tool in the coming years.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
📸 Apple working on AI updates to Xcode
DALL-E 3
Apple is reportedly testing an AI-powered coding assistant for its Xcode programming software. The tool could be released to third-party developers later this year.
The details:
Apple’s programming tool uses an LLM to predict and complete strings of code (much like Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot and Amazon’s CodeWhisperer).
This means the tool would offer autocomplete suggestions in real time as developers work in Xcode.
The company is also reportedly looking into generative AI features for consumer-facing products.
These features could include automatic playlist creation in Apple Music, AI-generated slideshows in Keynote and chatbot search features for Spotlight.
Why it matters: For developers who use Xcode to build apps for Apple platforms, this tool would significantly boost productivity by integrating directly into their existing workflows. At a broader level, Apple is positioning itself to enhance user experiences by integrating generative AI into everyday technologies.
