The Biden administration has forced a Saudi Aramco venture capital firm to sell its shares in an AI chip startup backed by OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman.
The details:
Rain AI is a startup that designs AI chips inspired by the way the brain works.
Prosperity7 was a lead investor in a $25 million funding round for Rain AI in 2022. It sold its shares in the startup after a review by the U.S. Committee on Foreign Investment.
The U.S. is closely monitoring the activity of Middle Eastern wealth funds due to concerns over their close ties to China.
The White House is especially focused on stunting China’s development of future innovations including AI.
The relevance: Earlier this week American spy agencies issued warnings about Emirati firm G42’s work with large Chinese companies. This move is part of a larger U.S. government initiative to cut off China’s access to advanced American tech.

A new report by the U.K. Department of Education warns that white collar workers are most at risk of having their jobs automated by AI.
What you should know:
The government agency assessed 365 different jobs and compared them against 10 AI applications to see whether the roles could be automated.
Management consultants and business analysts are at the highest risk of having their jobs replaced by AI.
Hands-on workers like roofers, construction occupations, cleaners and launderers are less likely to be replaced.
Professional athletes are the least likely to lose their jobs.
Why it matters: LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky recently said the gold standard of a bachelor’s degree is jeopardized by AI’s rapid advancement. An alarming amount of new research suggests that many degrees could soon be obsolete.
The bottom line: Take the time to upskill in AI now before you end up behind the curve.
BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
📸 Amazon offers human benchmarking teams to test AI models
Source: Noah Berger / The Verge
Amazon Web Services (AWS) just announced Model Evaluation on Bedrock, which allows developers to evaluate which AI models best suit their needs.
Key points:
Without a way to transparently test models, developers often use larger models for projects that could’ve been built on smaller ones.
Model Evaluation lets customers test their own data on a benchmarking platform to better understand their needs.
Customers can also work with an AWS human evaluation team to outline customized pricing and timelines for their projects.
Bedrock hosts popular third-party AI models like Llama 2, Claude 2 and Stable Diffusion.
What this means: AWS is making a strong push to equip developers with everything they need to build AI models that suit their business’s needs. This will lead the way for widespread AI adoption and potentially contribute to job displacement.
