TOP STORY

🗞️ OpenAI announces SearchGPT

Source: OpenAI

OpenAI is testing SearchGPT, a prototype of a new AI search engine that equips the company’s core models with access to information on the web.

What you need to know:

  • SearchGPT utilizes ChatGPT’s conversational format to answer user queries in a single browser.

  • This allows users to ask follow-up questions without prompting a new search, allowing SearchGPT to reference the context from previous queries.

  • OpenAI says the tool is designed to connect users with publishers by prominently citing them in searches.

  • The SearchGPT prototype is currently rolling out to a small group of users and publishers. You can join the waitlist here

Why it matters: This prototype doesn’t seem to reinvent the wheel when it comes to search engines. That said, pairing the conversational capabilities of OpenAI’s models with real-time information from the web makes it easier for users to find exactly what they’re looking for. The search engine market may prove to be extremely profitable for OpenAI, which is positioned to threaten Google’s core product.
