TOP STORY

🗞️ OpenAI building agents that can take control of devices

DALL-E 3

OpenAI is reportedly developing AI agents that can automate complex tasks by taking control of a user’s device.

What you need to know:

  • A device agent will be able to take over a device to perform tasks that require text and clicks.

  • Another agent will automate web tasks like scheduling reservations/meetings and completing online payments.

  • OpenAI envisions AI personal assistants that are equipped with extensive knowledge about individual users and workplaces.

Why it matters: The creation of personalized AI assistants is emerging as an industrywide goal for AI companies. Tech giants like Apple and Google aim to do this by integrating generative AI capabilities into their devices, but OpenAI hopes to go a step further with agents that can work autonomously across different apps and the web.

AI INSIGHT

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan used AI to deliver a victory speech to his supporters from jail after a stunning final vote tally

The rundown:

  • With Khan imprisoned, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party campaigned with AI-generated speeches that replicated his voice.

  • PTI was barred from running in last week’s elections, but members of the party campaigned as independents.

  • Khan’s supporters rallied to defeat the military-backed Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party.

  • Final results put independents in the lead with 93 of 264 seats in parliament.

Why it matters: There’s still no clear winner in Pakistan’s messy election. Regardless, the success of Khan-backed independents is pretty remarkable given the circumstances. AI is rapidly asserting itself as a powerful tool for political campaigns.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

📸 Frame glasses promise ‘AI superpowers’

Source: Brilliant Labs

Brilliant Labs just released the Frame smart glasses featuring AI translations, web search and visual analysis.

Key points:

  • The glasses can do things like translate speech in real time and search the web for a product you’re looking at.

  • Retrieved information appears as an overlay directly on the lens.

  • Frame combines AI systems from OpenAI, Whisper and Perplexity.

  • The glasses are priced at $349 for preorder.

The bigger picture: Frame is one of several AI gadgets to hit the market in the last few months. While it certainly boasts some cool features, it will probably join the growing list of products that failed to rival the smartphone’s convenience.
