🗞️ OpenAI releases mini version of GPT-4o
DALL-E 3
OpenAI just introduced GPT-4o mini, a slimmed-down and more cost-efficient version of its flagship model GPT-4o.
What you should know:
GPT-4o mini outperforms competing small language models (Gemini Flash and Claude Haiku) across several benchmarks, including reasoning tasks, math and coding proficiency.
The model is designed to be faster for everyday tasks and more affordable than OpenAI’s large language models.
GPT-4o mini is also the company’s first model to deploy a new safety tactic called “instruction hierarchy” that helps prevent it from being misused.
OpenAI hopes developers will use GPT-4o to build custom AI solutions like customer support chatbots.
Why it matters: OpenAI envisions a future where AI models are seamlessly integrated into every app and website. Reaching this point will require custom AI applications to be efficient and affordable. Small language models are emerging as the solution, offering advanced textual intelligence at a much lower cost than large language models.

🤖 Small Texas town tries to capitalize on surging AI demand
Source: Development Corporation of Abilene
Yesterday Houston-based Lancium and Denver-based Crusoe Energy Systems announced a multi-billion dollar deal to build a 200-megawatt data center just outside Abilene, Texas.
Key points:
Abilene is a town of 125,000 people located in the heart of West Texas.
Lancium President Ali Fenn says that at full capacity, this project will be one of the largest AI data centers in the world.
For Texas miners, the move signals a shift from cryptocurrency to the AI industry.
Other data mining companies have capitalized on the soaring power demand by making similar pivots to AI.
A changing world: Well over 100 years ago Abilene was a stopping point on the cross-country cattle trail in the American Old West. In 2024, it’s set to host one of the world’s largest data centers in the race to power AI technology. Pretty crazy stuff.
BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
📸 Meta pulls future AI models from Europe
Source: THE DECODER
Meta says it will not launch its upcoming multimodal AI model or future open-source models in the European Union.
The details:
The company cites “the unpredictable nature of the European regulatory environment” as the reason for its decision.
Meta has also paused the use of its generative AI tools in Brazil.
Last week the EU finalized compliance deadlines for tech companies under its new AI Act.
Meta follows a similar decision by Apple, which recently said it would likely exclude the EU from its Apple Intelligence rollout.
The big picture: The EU market is fairly important for tech companies, with a consumer base of roughly 447 million people and a $17 trillion economy. Despite this, the strictness of the region’s new AI Act is causing a growing number of companies to withhold new generative AI products from Europe altogether. Whether the fault lies with the EU or tech companies’ data practices, these moves raise suspicions.
