OpenAI fired its co-founder and CEO Sam Altman late Friday afternoon. Greg Brockman, another OpenAI co-founder and top executive, resigned from the company following the news.
The details:
Altman was fired after a review found he was not “consistently candid in his communications” with the board of directors.
OpenAI’s investors weren’t given an opportunity to weigh in on the board’s decision. The company was reportedly in talks to bring Altman back as CEO a day after his firing.
Microsoft has since hired Altman and Brockman to lead a new advanced AI research team.
Former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear is taking over the reins at OpenAI.
The relevance: Microsoft has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI and played a crucial role in the development of ChatGPT. Shear and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella say they are still committed to the partnership between the two companies. Nevertheless, Altman’s new team at Microsoft will include some key OpenAI talent that departed following his firing. More resignations are expected to come this week.

Meta has reportedly disbanded its Responsible AI (RAI) team as it reallocates AI resources.
Key points:
RAI was created in 2019 to identify problems with AI training approaches.
Meta says it remains committed to developing AI responsibly.
Most RAI members will move to Meta’s generative AI product team, while others will work on the company’s AI infrastructure.
The team already endured restructuring earlier this year when it faced a series of layoffs.
Under the radar: This is some negative news that will be overshadowed by the Sam Altman drama. Meta’s move is not a good sign as governments race to implement regulatory guardrails for AI development.
