🗞️ The Latest: OpenAI plans to build ‘iPhone of artificial intelligence’

OpenAI is planning to build “the iPhone of artificial intelligence” with Apple’s former chief design officer Jony Ive. The project is aided by over $1 billion in funding from Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son.
Key points:
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hopes to use Ive’s design firm LoveFrom to develop OpenAI’s first consumer device.
Altman and Ive aim to create a device that provides a “more natural and intuitive user experience” to interact with AI.
Ive played a pivotal role in the creation of the first iPhone, but previously expressed concerns about the addictive nature of the technology.
The Financial Times reports that this project with OpenAI could enable Ive to create an interactive computing device that’s less reliant on screens.
Details surrounding the project are slim, but discussions are said to be “serious.”
Why it matters: AI innovators have been transparent about their ambitions to replace smartphones. Altman already has some experience in this space as an investor in Humane’s wearable AI pin. It would take a revolutionary new product to kill smartphones for good, but this week’s announcements from Meta and OpenAI suggest that we are headed in that direction.

50-word review: Adori is a solid tool for generating video content with AI, but I was not impressed with its AI voiceovers. Still, keep this tool on your radar as the platform will soon add a feature allowing users to clone their own voice.
📸 Industry Spotlight: Newsrooms are optimizing work with AI despite concerns

A new global survey published by JournalismAI reveals that newsrooms around the world are using AI to optimize work despite concerns about bias and accuracy.
Key points:
JournalismAI is an initiative backed by the London School of Economics and Political Science and the Google News Initiative.
Its new global survey includes the perspective of over 120 editors and journalists from 105 newsrooms across 46 countries.
Over 75% of respondents said they have used AI somewhere in the chain of news gathering, production and distribution.
More than half mentioned increased efficiency and enhanced productivity as reasons to use AI.
Around a third hope AI technology will help newsrooms reach a wider audience, personalize reader experiences and enhance audience engagement.
Shock factor: These are surprising numbers considering more than 60% of respondents were concerned about the ethical implications of AI in journalism. AI-generated news articles have made headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent months, yet this survey suggests newsrooms are doubling down on the use of the technology.
The bottom line: The journalism industry could be one of the big winners of the AI revolution, but newsrooms must proceed with caution to maintain standards of accuracy, fairness and transparency.
