BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

📸 Perplexity aims to replace internet search engines

Perplexity hopes to challenge Google’s dominance in web search with its “answer engine.”

Key points:

  • Perplexity’s answer engine uses AI to provide direct answers (instead of website links) to search queries.

  • The product is used by roughly 10 million people monthly. It peaked at 53 million visits in November.

  • Jeff Bezos and other tech executives just invested $74 million in the company, raising its total valuation to $520 million.

  • Perplexity currently isn’t profitable and makes $5 million to $10 million in annual revenue.

Why it matters: Perplexity won’t replace Google overnight, but its answer engine could set a precedent for future versions of leading search engines. Although Google and Bing already run pretty seamlessly, advances in AI could make finding information online even easier.
