Photoshop is easier to use than ever with this update

How Adobe Firefly's generative AI is changing the design game

Welcome back to The Daily Update! We have some exciting stuff on deck today so I’ll get right into it.

Adobe just integrated the power of AI into Photoshop. Using Adobe Firefly’s generative AI, you can now make remarkable edits to images using text prompts within the Photoshop (beta) app. Here are a few ways you can take advantage of this update:

Remove/replace objects

Select the lasso or object selection tool, then outline or select an object.

Phone selected with object selection tool

Click the “generative fill” button. Type “remove” or “[different object]” (ex. “notepad”) and enter.

Change background by using the “invert selection” option on the generative AI toolbar.

“Marble countertop” generative fill

Create new images/objects

Use the lasso tool to select any part of an image. Click the “generative fill” button and type the name of the object you want to add. In the examples below I requested a “seagull” and a “Hawaiian monk seal.”

Selection 1

Seagull

Selection 2

Hawaiian Monk Seal

Note that you can choose between “variations” of an image in the right toolbar.

Extend an image

Select the crop tool and expand the canvas.

Using the crop tool

Use the “Rectangular Marquee” tool near the top of the toolbar on the left to highlight the white space. Then select “generative fill.” Click “generate” without typing anything.

Mountain range extended with generative fill

Although generative fill is currently only available in the beta version of Adobe Photoshop, it is capable of adding, extending, and removing content surprisingly well. You can achieve realistic results that will enhance your photos in seconds. Generative AI certainly looks like the future of Photoshop.
