🗞️ Microsoft-backed research exposes flaws in ChatGPT

A new paper published by Microsoft-backed researchers reveals that OpenAI’s GPT-4 large language model can be tricked into releasing biased results and leaking private information.

The details:

  • OpenAI’s flagship AI model has gotten more trustworthy, but is also more vulnerable to jailbreaking and bias.

  • Researchers bypassed GPT-4’s safeguards and got the model to ignore security measures and leak personal information and conversation histories.

  • The team says GPT-4 “follows misleading information more precisely” and is more likely to carry out every detail of complicated prompts.

  • Vulnerabilities were not found in consumer-facing GPT-4-based products.

  • The team includes researchers from the Univerisity of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley, Center for AI Safety and Microsoft Research.

The bottom line: Even top-of-the-line AI models are prone to a plethora of security risks. This is bad news for OpenAI as the FTC continues to investigate the company for potential consumer harm.

📸 Ghostwriter offers solution for AI-generated music

Source: Bloomberg

Anonymous AI creator Ghostwriter proposed a clearinghouse system for artists to license their voices during an interview with Bloomberg.

What you need to know:

  • Ghostwriter rose to fame with a viral song featuring cloned voices of Drake and The Weeknd. He has since released another AI-generated song using the voices of Travis Scott and 21 Savage.

  • He says the industry should set up a clearinghouse where artists and labels set their own terms for licensing their voices to AI projects.

  • Terms could include monetary splits and usage restrictions (no political speech, hate speech, etc.).

  • Ghostwriter compared AI technology to music sampling by early hip-hop artists, which has gradually been accepted over time.

Why it matters: Ghostwriter’s model is similar to the one proposed by the AI-friendly artist Grimes. While this solution is promising, the three major labels that control more than two-thirds of the music industry are unlikely to embrace disruptive AI technology. Still, a future where artists’ voice clones can earn profits seems plausible.
