TOP STORY

🗞️ OpenAI says Russia and China used its tech for propaganda campaigns

DALL-E 3

Yesterday OpenAI reported that groups from Russia, China, Iran and Israel used its tech to manipulate public opinion and influence political outcomes around the world.

What you should know:

  • The groups used OpenAI’s tech to write social media posts, translate them into various languages and automatically post them online.

  • OpenAI says it shut down the ChatGPT accounts associated with the propaganda efforts.

  • OpenAI’s Ben Nimmo says none of the groups were able to gain much traction on social media.

  • Nimmo added that he observed propaganda networks “generating text at a higher volume and with fewer errors than these operations have traditionally managed.”

Why it matters: This news doesn’t come as a surprise, but it’s a reminder that foreign adversaries are weaponizing AI in subtle ways online. AI-enabled propaganda and misinformation will only become greater threats as industry giants like OpenAI continue to launch more advanced models.

AI TOOL OF THE DAY

🤖 Mistral introduces first LLM for coding

Source: Mistral

French AI startup Mistral just launched Codestral, its first large language model that specializes in coding tasks.

Key points:

  • Codestral is fluent in over 80 programming languages, including popular ones like Python, Java, C, C++, JavaScript and Bash.

  • The tool can complete coding functions, write tests and complete any partial code while reducing the risk of errors and bugs.

  • Mistral says Codestral already outperforms existing code-centric models across most programming languages.

  • Codestral is available for download on HuggingFace

Quick thoughts: This model still hasn’t been tested publicly, but several users’ first impressions seem promising. You can click here to learn more.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

📸 OpenAI inks major news licensing agreements

DALL-E 3

OpenAI has reached licensing agreements with Vox Media and The Atlantic as the company continues to expand its reach in the news industry.

The details:

  • OpenAI will be able to use both publishers’ content to train AI models.

  • The Vox Media partnership will give OpenAI access to notable online content brands like Vox, The Verge, Eater and SB Nation.

  • ChatGPT will include citations to the publishers’ work when it’s used to respond to a user query.

  • Both agreements also allow the publishers to use OpenAI’s tech to power new journalism products.

Why it matters: OpenAI is building an impressive portfolio of licensing agreements. The company already has deals with News Corp, Axel Springer, the Financial Times and the Associated Press. ChatGPT needs real-time access to credible news to stay up to date, but these agreements could also help OpenAI launch a Google Search competitor very soon.
