🗞️ The Latest in AI: Google DeepMind’s CEO says next AI system will surpass ChatGPT
Demis Hassabis announced the development of a new AI system called Gemini, which he thinks will eclipse OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Gemini is a large language model (LLM) that will combine the power of GPT-4 and AlphaGo. This combination aims to give Gemini new capabilities such as planning and problem solving.
AlphaGo is another AI system from DeepMind that defeated the world’s Go champion in 2016. Gemini will build upon reinforcement learning and tree search methods used in AlphaGo. Reinforcement learning is a technique in which software learns by making repeated attempts at challenging problems and receiving feedback on its performance. Tree search is a method that allows software to explore and remember possible moves in a game like Go.
Gemini could be a core part of Google’s strategy to counter competition by OpenAI and other generative AI technologies. Its development is expected to take several months and could cost tens or hundreds of millions of dollars.
DeepMind is additionally eyeing an even more groundbreaking AI effort. Researchers might try to augment LLMs with insights from other areas of AI, such as robotics and neuroscience. This could enhance AI’s capabilities by enabling it to learn from physical experiences of the world.

📸 Business Spotlight: How Grammarly upgraded its platform with AI
On March 9, 2023, the company introduced GrammarlyGO — an on-demand contextually aware assistant powered by AI. Grammarly’s platform already utilized advanced systems that use AI techniques to make corrections and suggestions to users’ writing, but GrammarlyGO goes a step further by writing content from scratch.
GrammarlyGO is designed to generate content attuned to each user’s voice and intended audience. Users can prompt GrammarlyGO with basic instructions and it will generate a polished draft in seconds. The AI writing assistant can also rewrite content and ideate outlines or content ideas.
Grammarly’s AI assistant works across desktop applications and websites, which enables it to reply to emails in a single click. This also means that GrammarlyGO can be used on social media sites like Twitter and LinkedIn.
The company’s cloud-based typing assistant has already leveled up since introducing GrammarlyGO. Although there are a number of similar tools on the market, GrammarlyGO sets itself apart as a fully customizable AI assistant that works in your voice with profile options for tone, formality and professional relevance
