TOP STORY

🗞️ OpenAI acquires Rockset to boost enterprise offerings

DALL-E 3

OpenAI has acquired enterprise data startup Rockset as it looks to bring actionable intelligence to its clients.

The rundown:

  • OpenAI will tap into Rockset’s infrastructure to build tools for real-time search and data analytics.

  • The goal is to help enterprise clients turn their data into actionable steps to streamline their operations.

  • Rockset’s technology and team will gradually integrate into OpenAI.

  • This move exemplifies OpenAI’s growing push into enterprise sales and partnerships.

Why it matters: Rockset’s tech will power “retrieval infrastructure” across OpenAI’s product suite. This will enable tools like ChatGPT to solve complex problems based on ever-changing data, making them exponentially more useful to businesses.

AI TOOL OF THE DAY

🤖 Shopify launches AI ‘Sidekick’ in early access

Source: Shopify

Shopify just announced that its new AI “Sidekick” chatbot is launching in early access alongside other “Summer ‘24 Edition” updates.

What it does:

  • Sidekick is designed to be a support chatbot for merchants.

  • It can do things like create discount codes, generate reports about a Shopify store or suggest blog post ideas.

  • Sidekick is currently limited to English stores in North America.

  • Shopify also made a few other AI announcements, including AI-powered product categorization and suggested replies for customer chats.

Why it matters: Sidekick is a pretty typical chatbot, but it could be a game changer for over 4 million online stores that use Shopify. The e-commerce platform is essentially equipping merchants with a 24/7 assistant that can automate important tasks and make informed decisions. Click here to learn more.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

📸 Apple and Meta discuss AI partnership

DALL-E 3

Apple and Meta are reportedly discussing a deal to integrate Meta’s generative AI models into Apple Intelligence.

The details:

  • A partnership with Meta would look similar to Apple’s OpenAI deal that will integrate ChatGPT into the next version of Siri.

  • Apple is also reportedly considering AI partnerships with Google, Anthropic and Perplexity.

  • The company’s goal is to provide users with the flexibility to choose which external AI models they want to work alongside Apple’s internal systems.

  • These efforts are still facing major legal obstacles in Europe and China

Why it matters: Apple's AI strategy is more ambitious than previously thought. Future iPhones may become centralized AI hubs, offering access to several top-of-the-line models on a single device. Apple Intelligence is shaping up to be a versatile platform that will bring a wide range of practical AI applications right to users’ fingertips.

(Update: Bloomberg just reported that Apple rejected Meta’s offer to integrate its AI into the iPhone. Talks with Google and Anthropic remain ongoing.)
