Google is preparing to release Gemini Ultra later this week according to a leaked changelog on X.
What you should know:
Gemini Ultra is Google’s most capable AI model, able to take on highly complex tasks like coding, logical reasoning and creative collaboration.
Google’s Bard, which is now powered by Gemini Pro, will be renamed “Gemini.”
Gemini Ultra will reportedly be available through a paid “Gemini Advanced” subscription starting Feb. 8.
Google also plans to launch a Gemini mobile app for Android.
Why it matters: Google currently offers free usage of most of its AI products. The shift toward a paid subscription model suggests that Gemini Ultra is on par with, if not more advanced than ChatGPT’s latest model.
RESEARCH INSIGHT
🤖 AI deciphers ancient Greek scrolls
Source: Vesuvius Project
A team of student researchers just used AI to decipher 2,000-year-old papyrus scrolls written by an ancient Greek philosopher.
The details:
The charred Herulaneum scrolls were buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius 2,000 years ago.
Computer scientist Brent Seales has been trying to decipher these texts with his team for nearly 20 years.
Seales co-founded the Vesuvius Challenge with a grand prize of $700,000 to attract researchers to his cause.
The winning students from Egypt, Switzerland and the U.S. used 3D mapping and AI techniques to decode hundreds of words across over 15 columns of text.
Why it matters: AI helped decode a previously incomprehensible piece of history. Researchers say this feat paves the way for AI techniques to decipher the rest of the scrolls in their entirety.
BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
📸 Microsoft announces AI newsroom projects with Semafor
DALL-E 3
Microsoft says it’s partnering with Semafor and other news organizations to help journalists integrate generative AI into content creation.
Key points:
Microsoft will help news organizations create policies to use AI responsibly in newsgathering and business practices.
Semafor will launch a global breaking news feed called “Signals” that journalists can use to provide readers with analysis and insights on breaking news.
Signals uses AI tools from Microsoft and OpenAI.
The move comes as both tech companies face lawsuits over the unauthorized use of published content to train AI models.
What this means: Signals essentially aims to summarize and organize breaking news from around the world. At first glance, this seems like an effective way to equip journalists with the information they need to consistently deliver truthful content to their audiences.
